This project formed an essential part of the supporting works for the Poole Gateway Building project and future developments on Talbot Campus. The provision of the Boundary Roundabout link road and bus hub were critical to the implementation of the wider Talbot Masterplan set out within the Borough of Poole Supplementary Planning Document. Bournemouth University has been involved in the development of the Talbot Masterplan alongside Borough of Poole, Bournemouth Borough Council, Talbot Village Trust and Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) since 2013.

The Talbot Campus infrastructure project provided the following benefits:

  • A new link road from Boundary Roundabout – this is an all-purpose road created off the Boundary Roundabout, providing two-way vehicular access to BU, AUB and Talbot Village. It supports the ongoing plans for the decongestion of the Wallisdown Road corridor by the Borough of Poole and a safer and more effective route for BU buses around the Talbot Campus. The link road was adopted by the local authority upon completion
  • The bus hub - this provides bus users with prominent and convenient access to Talbot Campus. It has also enabled more frequent bus services, allowing for the future growth in bus use required to accommodate the increasing provision of student accommodation at Lansdowne
  • The expansion of car park H in Cutler Close - this was a key aspect to mitigate the impact of this and other projects, which displaced parking from elsewhere on Talbot Campus
  • Alterations to the visitor and events car parks near Talbot House – these were required to make way for the link road and bus hub
  • New Estates ‘goods in’ and waste compound area – this provided a centralised facility enabling more effective Facilities Management operations and improved the appearance of the south face of Poole House.

The infrastructure project was completed in January 2018.

It was supported by a high-quality campus-wide landscape scheme, which reinforced the entrance points to the campus. Any impact on the environment was alleviated and managed via a biodiversity mitigation strategy.
