Quick guide for students on logging attendance

Bring a smartphone, table or laptop to class

Get your device ready as soon as you come into class – switch on and connect to the internet/BU WiFi

At some point during the session, staff will give you a 4-digit code specific to that teaching session

Go to the Jisc attendance system; you can do this either (a) using this link (bookmark it in your browser or add it as a button to your home screen to make this quicker); (b) click the blue 'log your attendance' button on the right hand side of this page or (c) use the QR code that your teaching staff may display in your teaching rooms

Select “Bournemouth University” in the “Institution” menu and log in with your BU user name and password.

Enter the 4-digit code and click CHECKIN.

Please tell the staff member in the room if you have difficulty getting onto the Wi-Fi, accessing the Jisc system or entering the code and they will let you know what to do. They may ask you to report the issue to IT (https://itservices.bournemouth.ac.uk or call on (01202) 965515 or freephone 0808 196 2332).

Tell your Programme or Level Leader if you don’t have a smartphone, tablet or laptop you can use to log attendance.

Sometimes in smaller groups, staff may log your attendance themselves by taking a register.

Instructions and guidance for students on logging attendance at teaching sessions

Some of this information will be different for students on apprenticeship programmes or programmes with Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRB) attendance requirements. These additional requirements will be communicated through your programme team.

To log your attendance you will need to bring either a smartphone, tablet or laptop to class which will connect to the internet/BU WiFi.

What happens if I’m late?

What happens if I don’t attend or don’t log my attendance?

We won’t talk to you about your attendance just because you miss a single session or a few sessions over a semester. If the data shows that you are not attending regularly, we may call to check you are ok and your personal tutor or programme leader may talk to you about your attendance when discussing your academic progress. If there is low attendance across a unit or programme, staff may remind all students to attend.

A friend has asked me to send them the code for a session as they won’t be attending – what should I do?

Please don’t do this, or ask others to provide you with the codes. It is important that your attendance data is accurate so you and the university can understand your learning experience and offer you any support you need. Students are required to comply with the BU Attendance & Engagement Policy, and this states that students must not take actions to indicate that you are present at a session when you are not or support other students in doing this. In serious cases we could take disciplinary action for sharing codes.

Why are we logging student attendance?

How will my attendance data be used?

If you are not attending classes or not attending very many sessions, we may contact you to check that you are ok and find out whether you need any support or information to help you engage with your course or deal with any issues you are facing.

Your individual attendance data is used by staff to understand more about how you are getting on with your course and your learning development and support you in getting the most out your studies. Your attendance data may be referred to when you are speaking to your personal tutor or your teaching team. When you meet with your personal tutor, you will be able to look at the data about you in our learning analytics system, where attendance data is combined with other information about your use of Brightspace and your assessment marks data to give an overview of how you are engaging in your course and progressing with your learning.

If you are on a course accredited by a professional body or an apprenticeship course, it will also be used to check that you are meeting attendance and engagement requirements set by regulatory bodies for these courses.

If you have a student visa, your attendance data will be used to check that you are meeting the requirements under the immigration regulations and your student visa to engage appropriately with your studies.

We will use your data along with all other students’ attendance data to understand more about patterns of student engagement and attendance and what we need to think about in planning and delivering our courses and making arrangements to support students.
